Infectious cancer preserves dog genes for 11,000 years

Call it the Methuselah mutt. There are genes from a dog that lived 11,000 years ago in an infectious cancer that forms tumours on the genitals of dogs today. The cancer genes therefore preserve information about early domesticated dogs.

Canine transmissible venereal tumour (CTVT) is one of only two known mammalian cancers that can move from animal to animal through physical contact. The other is a cancer transmitted between Tasmanian devils when they bite each other. A genetic analysis suggests that CTVT originated about 11,000 years ago, surviving the millennia by moving from dog to dog during mating.

"These tumours are in dogs all around the world, yet they all originate from one single dog that lived all those years ago," says Elizabeth Murchison of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Hinxton, UK. Her team analysed DNA from two dogs with CTVT, one from Australia and one from Brazil.

"It's such a strange entity," says Murchison. "It's a cancer that's become a parasite, and yet it came from the same species that is now its host."
Cancer clones Modern CTVT cells are clones of the original cancer, but over the millennia they have accumulated almost 2 million unique mutations through mistakes in cell duplication. By contrast, human tumours typically have just 1000 to 5000, says Murchison, because they are not transmissible so only live a few decades at most.

These mutations revealed CTVT's age. By studying how many there were and working out the order and rate they appeared, the team calculated that the mother parasitic cell emerged 11,000 years ago. That is long after dogs first became domesticated, which may have happened as far back as 33,000 years ago.

"It's intriguing how a tumour has survived for more than 10,000 years travelling round and infecting a very large number of dogs," says Kerstin Lindblad-Toh of the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, head of the first team to sequence a dog's genome in 2005. "If more examples [of transmissible cancers] were found, it would be interesting to see what genetic changes characterise this type of long-lived tumour."

The samples taken from the Australian dog and the Brazilian dog seem to have diverged from one another about 500 years ago, at the height of European expansion. "It means that the cancer lived in just one small population of dogs for 10,500 years, but dogs carrying it were then picked up by explorers or seafarers who spread them, and the cancers they carried, all round the world," says Murchison.

Apart from the mutations, the DNA in CTVT is identical to that of the dog in which it originated. By comparing the DNA in CTVT cells with DNA from modern dogs and wolves, Murchison pieced together what the first infected canine probably looked like.

"We put together a genetic identikit of the dog," says Murchison. "It probably had a browny-grey agouti coat, a pointy snout, prickly ears, short hair, and was a dog, not a wolf," she says. It was most similar to modern huskies and Alaskan malamutes, but its closest relatives may now be extinct.

Origin of cancer

Murchison says the cancer probably evolved in a badly inbred population, in which the cancer cells passed between the animals during sex, but were overlooked by the immune system because the dogs were so closely related.

This lack of genetic diversity is the reason that the other known transmissible cancer spreads between Tasmanian devils. But the Tasmanian devil cancer is 30 years old at most.

CTVT is not an aggressive cancer and is easily curable in 90 per cent of cases, says Murchison. This may be because a mild form has evolved and adapted itself to life in its dog hosts. She adds that CTVT will probably go on for thousands more years, but may eventually go extinct if the cancer cells acquire too many mutations, which would cripple them.

No cancers of this kind have ever developed in people, but if they did, information from the Tasmanian devils and CTVT could help stop them, says Michael Stratton, also at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute.

Dog with no eyes learns echolocation

Meet blind Rowan the wonder dog - born without eyes - who miraculously finds his way around using ECHOLOCATION. Despite being unable to see, German spitz Rowan barks and listens to the echos to help him tell where he is in relation to nearby objects. Owner Sam Orchard, 41, was shocked when a vet told her that a congenital defect meant Rowan had been born without eyes. But 18-month-old Rowan is now almost indistinguishable from a sighted dog after learning to use his barks to judge where he is.

Kabang, la historia de un perro héroe que salvo la vida de 2 personas

Las hazañas heroicas y trágicas de una perra en Filipinas llamada Kabang han tocado los corazones de todo el mundo y atrajo la atención de un equipo de veterinarios del norte de California que han ofrecido su ayuda.

La hembra de raza mixta, que se asemeja a un pastor alemán de pelo corto, se convirtió en un héroe nacional en diciembre, cuando supuestamente se tiró en el camino a una motocicleta que estaba justo a punto de matar dos chicas jóvenes que cruzaban una calle en la ciudad de Zamboanga.

La perra salvó a la hija y la sobrina de su dueño pero sacrificó su mandíbula superior y el hocico, los cuales fueron cortados cuando ella se enredó en los radios de la motocicleta. La herida horrible en Kabang, no le quitaron que siga siendo cariñosa y leal, literalmente, con media cara.

Estudio muestra que los perros sienten el dolor de las personas y buscan aliviarlo

El altruismo emocional de los perros: estudio sugiere que los perros son capaces de detectar el sufrimiento de las personas y reaccionan ante este brindando comfort.


La intuición que tienen las personas que conviven con perros de que estos animales son sensibles a sus sentimientos parece confirmarse por un reciente estudio. Los perros reaccionan al dolor humano de una manera sumisa que se ajusta a proveer alivio –comio si el verdadero entrenamiento biológico de esta especie fuera la empatía.

Un experimento realizado por psicólogos de la Universidad de Goldmisths en Londres probó a 18 perros en distintas situaciones, con sus dueños y extraños, en las que los voluntarios aparentaron llorar, susurrar o tararear y hablar. Los perros reiteradamente reaccionaron a los simulacros de llanto, acercándose a estas personas y buscando iniciar contacto físico.

El tarareo fue diseñado paar ser un comportamiento relativamente nuevo, que podría provocar la curiosidad de los perros. El hecho de que los perros diferenciaron entre el llanto y el tarareo indica que su respuesta no fue meramente motivada por la curiosidad”, dijo la Dra Deborah Custance.

Los perros respondieron al llanto de una persona no obstante que no fuera su dueño, lo que parece mostrar que su respuesta fue genuinamente empática y o el resultado de la búsqueda de una recompensa o de sus propias necesidades. El hecho de que los perros reaccionen a una emoción fingida no significa que no sepan percibir nuestras emociones, ya que nuestro mismo cerebro no hace distinción entre si una emoción es simulada o la experimentamos espontáneamente, de la misma forma que no distingue del todo si vemos algo o imaginamos eso mismo.

Hace algunas semanas reportamos sobre una interesante investigación que sugería que las ratas son capaces de sentir y actuar dirigidas por la empatía (y que ésta podría ser la emoción universal). Por otro lado el biólogo de la Universidad de Cambridge, Rupert Sheldrake, ha realizado numerosos experimentos que parecen mostrar que las mascotas tienen una capacidad telepática para saber cuándo sus dueños van a regresar a casa. No hay duda que los animales domésticos, y especialmente los perros, cumplen una admirable función servicial, como si estuvieran entre nosotros para expiar nuestras penas.

Tsunami-fearing city looks to animals for warning signs

SUSAKI, Kochi Prefecture--Feeling vulnerable to a catastrophe, this coastal city on the island of Shikoku will monitor fish, chickens and other animals for signs of a huge earthquake that could spawn a monster tsunami.

The Susaki city government is following the long-held idea that animals can sense impending disaster. The city said April 5 that it will release details of the monitoring of the animals to the public, but it will not issue evacuation orders based only on their behavior.

The city’s decision to regularly monitor animal behavior for possible earthquakes came after the central government released its disaster forecast in March.

According to the forecast, Susaki could be hit by a tsunami as high as 23.9 meters if a powerful earthquake strikes with its epicenter around the Nankai Trough, which runs just off the island. The city, with a population of about 25,000, is prepared for only a 7-meter-high tsunami.

(Records showed that such earthquakes have struck the region in 1707, 1854 and 1946.)

After the Great East Japan Earthquake rocked the Tohoku region on March 11 last year, a 3.2-meter-tall tsunami hit Susaki, the highest in western Japan.

The city’s planned animal-monitoring project was announced after a researcher of structural geology who surveyed Shikoku suggested the step at a meeting of the city’s disaster task force in early April.

I believe we should not dismiss such a measure even if it has not been scientifically proved to be associated with earthquakes,” said Yoshihito Myojin, the deputy mayor who heads the task force. “We are going to flesh out details of the project to minimize the deaths from tsunami to close to zero.

The monitoring also involves checking underground water levels.

For centuries in Japan, strange animal behavior and other unusual occurrences have been reported before major earthquakes. They are known as macroscopic anomalous phenomena.

Well-known examples include catfish swimming erratically, rats running wild and wells drying up.

China is a frontrunner in research intended to establish links between animal behavior and seismic activity, mainly at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the nation’s top research center, and a wild animal zoo at Peking University in Beijing.


But reports about unusual animal behavior and events have never drawn serious attention from Japanese scientists. They say such incidents constantly occur, regardless of an earthquake.

That perception changed somewhat after the magnitude-7.3 Great Hanshin Earthquake struck the Kobe area on Jan. 17, 1995, killing more than 6,000 people.

After that temblor, numerous reports were provided by people who said they witnessed precursors of the quake.

A book titled “Zencho Shogen 1,519!” (Testimonies of precursors 1,519) authored by Kiyoshi Wadatsumi, professor emeritus at Osaka City University and a geologist, was published in September 1995, carrying about 3,000 such anecdotes. Among them are 1,519 cases reported by citizens in response to Wadatsumi’s request made through the media.

Reports related to living creatures totaled 781--324 about mammals, 281 about birds, 93 about fish, 40 about reptiles and 43 about insects.

The first accounts occurred about a month before the quake and the number peaked on Jan. 16, according to the book.

The episodes include:

  • a normally quiet dog barking three hours before the temblor and digging a hole under a fence in the garden to escape (a resident in Kobe’s Nishi Ward); 
  • two pet frogs kept indoors emerging from hibernation and making croaking sounds three days before the quake (a resident in Osaka’s Higashi-Yodogawa Ward); 
  • 10 eggs that were laid on Jan. 12 and bought at a supermarket, each containing two yolks (a resident in Osaka’s Higashinari Ward); 
  • hundreds of mullets measuring about 30 centimeters each swimming up the Akashi river in Hyogo Prefecture on Jan. 15 (a resident in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture).

The Susaki municipal government is not the only local government in Japan looking at animals for warning signs.

Shizuoka Prefecture began a similar project in 1996, soliciting information from the public through its website. Prefectural officials have yet to decide if they will use the data for disaster countermeasures.

The central government said there is an 88-percent likelihood that a Tokai earthquake, expected off the prefecture and the surrounding area, will strike within the next 30 years.

Some researchers speculate that animals behave differently before disasters because they can detect rising ion levels and changes in electromagnetic waves in the atmosphere that result from tectonic activities. Or they may be able to sense changes in electric currents running deep inside the Earth.

Although macroscopic anomalous phenomena is not considered a serious science, some are continuing their research.

At this stage, we have no counterargument to arguments that it is just a coincidence,” said Naoyuki Yada, associate professor of thermal engineering and earthquake prediction at the Kanagawa Institute of Technology in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture. “But it seems all animals, including humans, are equipped with the ability to sense a big vicissitude in the environment.

In his lab, Yada keeps two cats, a black one and a white one, with pedometers around their necks to monitor their activities.

They are usually docile, with pedometer readings of only dozens of steps a day.

But they displayed unusual behavior on March 9 last year, two days before the magnitude-9.0 earthquake struck northeastern Japan.

The count was nearly 400 for the white cat and around 500 for the black cat, even though they had been put in a cage that day.

When an aftershock measuring an upper 5 on Japan’s seismic scale of 7 shook Chiba Prefecture on the night of March 14, the counts for the white cat and black cat were 319 and 251, respectively.

Lungfish, goldfish, catfish and rats in the lab, which are observed with infrared ray sensors, were found dozens of times more active than usual.

Yada started studying animals for possible precursors 18 years ago. He conducted research under Wadatsumi, who died in January 2011.

Yada’s research found that the chances of an earthquake occurring within three days after cats showed erratic behavior, which is defined as more than 300 counts, are 64 percent for the white cat and 74 percent for the black cat.

Catfish’s accuracy rate tops 80 percent when at least 200 counts were recorded. Fish activity is counted each time it crosses the place where an infrared ray sensor was installed in the tank.

The only way for us to lead to successful earthquake prediction through animals is to discover regularities by accumulating data piece by piece,” he said. “We are still in a stage before that.

Yada this year began a project to send free kits to raise catfish to junior high and senior high schools across Japan to create a network of observation points.

He plans to release details of the monitoring activities on the Internet.

Since 1965, the central government has spent about 300 billion yen (3.7 billion) on research for earthquake predictions. But it has so far failed to produce tangible results.

Decenas de Beagles liberados del infierno de Green Hill (Imagen Actualizada)

El sábado, 28 de abril quedará impreso como una fecha histórica para el movimiento de liberación animal, italiana e internacional, en plena luz del día con la liberación de decenas de perros del campo de Green Hill al final de una marcha.
La liberación del campo de Montichiari de los perros es una clara señal de lo que ya no se admite la idea de los animales como conejillos de indias para la vivisección y de cómo los individuos están decididos a cambiar las cosas en persona. Esta campaña ha hecho una gran presión sobre las instituciones para cerrar la granja, pero miles de personas que han seguido no quieren escuchar promesas y mentiras y que es hora de salvar por lo menos algunos de esos prisioneros.
El desfile el sábado 28 de Montichiari tuvo lugar con más de 1000 personas marchando por las calles hasta la granja. Una vez cerca de la calle San Zenón, el camino del campamento, la gente atravesó la campiña y llegó a la granja. El despliegue policial no han impedido que las personas lleguen a la malla.

Algunas personas han encontrado la forma de pasar por encima de la alambrada y entrar en la granja, desde ese momento comenzaron momentos difíciles de describir, con agujeros en sus redes, cruces, cachorros pasando de mano en mano y huyendo a una nueva vida.

Los actos de liberación y de momentos de libertad, y no sólo para los perros, incluso para aquellos que han desafiado y violado la ley para poner en práctica un mayor sentido de la justicia, basado en la ética. Momentos que no se olvidarán fácilmente. La emoción de este día es increíble e imposible de describir.

Este día se trata de un movimiento que está decidido a cerrar el campo de Green Hill, nos habla de una conciencia que está despertando y un problema del pasado por mucho tiempo en silencio, el infierno de la vivisección. Green Hill se ha convertido desde hace tiempo un símbolo y la encarnación de lo que sucede en el laboratorio, un lugar desde el que tantas víctimas de la tortura y de la ciencia. Green Hill se ha convertido en un símbolo de morir, por ahora se están cayendo algunos de sus muros alambrados, y luego vendrá el tiempo cuando este lugar de privación de libertad puede ser sólo un recuerdo lejano.

Al final de este día inolvidable, por desgracia, nos enteramos de que 12 personas, 8 mujeres y 4 hombres fueron detenidos y llevados al cuartel de policía después de una noche en la cárcel fueron llevados a Verziano en Brescia. Para ellos se está moviendo rápidamente la solidaridad con los llamamientos para su liberación y los directores de fuera de la prisión para hacerle sentir nuestra cercanía. Pronto se sabrá de ellos

Rompieron o se subieron sobre las mallas de las puertas. Se abrieron paso dentro de la granja y abrieron las jaulas, tomaron los cachorros, las perras preñadas y todo aquel pequeño perro beagle que lograron encontrar. Ha sido una incursión en el criadero de perros, evento organizado por Occupay Green Hill, para buscar - de nuevo - el cierre de la operación de propiedad de la estadounidense Marshall.

La marcha partió del estacionamiento de PalaGeorge, asistieron alrededor de 1000 personas llegadas de todas partes del norte de Italia y también del centro. Por medio de la Artesanía sepentone desvió En lugar de ir hacia la calle San Zenón, principal carretera que conduce a la granja donde se desplegó el cordón de la policía, grupos de manifestantes han cortado a través de los campos y de los caminos, acercándose a las vallas.

A partir de entonces, la situación se ha confundido con grupos de manifestantes que trataron de abrir las puertas en el perímetro y los equipos móviles de la policía antidisturbios y policías desplegados para contenerlos. Por el lado de las puertas, sin embargo, los manifestantes han abierto una brecha en la valla e ingresado en la finca, entrando en los galpones y se llevaron por lo menos treinta perros.

Al final del día, la policía había detenido a 12 personas de Montichiari comisaría y llevados de allí a Desenzano. Algunos manifestantes dijeron que habían sufrido violencia por parte de algunos funcionarios.

"She did not want to leave her friends side"

The Apathy of Mankind has sometimes become unbearable and intolerable, the story... below narrated by the stranger that was kind enough to actually stop and help the poor Black Lab instead of standing on the side, gawking,taking pictures and videos clearly shows a heart broken dog that feels pain, confusion, lost and sorrow. It is I believe all of Rescues dream that one day Mans Compassion and Empathy will outweigh his Apathy for Gods Creatures! To the Man that stepped up and helped this scared, lost dog, I salute you for you are a Hero and you chose to take a stand!! Below is Eric's account of what happened first hand! I was driving south bound on Hacienda Blvd between Maplegrove & Fairgrove Ave. in the City of La Puente. Right in front of Ace hardware store which is on the east side of the street, I encountered a horrible scene. A Large tan dog lay motionless on the northbound slow lane of Hacienda Blvd. While a small black dog lay right beside it. Hacienda Blvd is a very busy street and I noticed cars slamming their breaks and swerving out of the way to avoid hitting the dogs. As this was happening people started to gather taking pictures and video without doing anything to help. I stopped, turned on my flashing lights, and proceeded to block the turn lane. I placed cones blocking the slow lane the dogs laid on. Animal Control was called and was on route to the scene.

The big tan dog which looked to be a Lab/Shepard mix lay dead with a severe head wound; the small black Lab laid crying and shivering. As I approach slowly and calmly, there wasn't any sign of aggression, or even threat. The black Lab allowed me to approach her; the dogs did not have any kind of collars to identify owners.

Two Sheriff Deputies drive by me as I lay on my knees keeping the dog calm, without even stopping to help. The Third Deputy actually turns into the adjacent parking lot sits in his patrol car, and sparks a very humorous conversation with people standing around recording this event.

Finally! Officer Perez (La County animal control) with his trainee arrives on scene to retrieve the two dogs. As, Officer Perez tries to lasso the black Lab, the dog ran away. Then came back again and lay down next to her fallen buddy. Officer Perez slowly places a rope around the dog's neck.

I asked him where he was taking the dog, he told Baldwin Park.

I am seeing her on Saturday to eval her.

There may possibly be a rescue group interested in her but not 100% on that, for now please network her in honor of her beloved friend that was killed right in front of her, she did not want to leave her friends side.

Amigos de Verdad

Después de perder a sus padres, este orangután de 3 años estaba tan deprimido que no quería comer y no respondía a los tratamientos médicos. Los veteranarians pensó que moriría de la tristeza. El zoológico guardianes encontró un perro enfermo de edad en los terrenos del parque en el parque zoológico, donde vivía el orangután y se llevó al perro al centro de tratamiento de los animales. El perro llegó al mismo tiempo el orangután estaba siendo tratado allí. Las 2 las almas perdidas se reunieron y han sido inseparables desde entonces.

El orangután encontró una nueva razón para vivir y cada uno siempre trata de su mejor esfuerzo para ser un buen compañero a su nuevo amigo. Ellos están juntos las 24 horas del día en todas sus actividades.

Viven en el norte de California, donde la natación es su pasatiempo favorito, a pesar de Roscoe (el orangután) es un poco de miedoso del agua y necesita la ayuda de su amigo para nadar.

Juntos han descubierto la alegría y la risa en la vida y el valor de la amistad. Han encontrado más que un hombro amigo en quien apoyarse. - Con Teresa Leigh Lowery y Vanroye Hilde.



Otro caso de una orangután pequeña que fue rescatada estando atada en malas condiciones en una plantación.


Orangutanes Sumatran  - en riesgo crítico
Sólo 6.600 orangutanes de Sumatra en peligro de extinción permanecen en estado silvestre. 6.000 de ellos dependen para su supervivencia en la selva del hábitat proporcionado por el Parque Nacional de Gunung LESSEUR en el norte de Sumatra. La eliminación de las plantaciones ilegales de palma aceitera, reforestación y protección del territorio hogar del Orangután junto con la educación y campañas de información pública se llevan a cabo por el Centro de orangután de Sumatra y la Sociedad del orangután con el apoyo de Rainforest Rescue.
