More Than Human: Tim Flach’s Striking Portraits of Animals

Erasing the awe-inspiring variety of sentient life impoverishes all our lives,” historian Joanna Bourke wrote in her poignant meditation on what it means to be human. And yet our relationship with animals and our understanding of their inner lives remain inadequate at best.

In 2010, photographer Tim Flach gave us his extraordinary dog portraits. This year, he’s back with More Than Human (UK;public library) — a collection of striking, expressive portraits of our non-human fellow beings, captured with equal parts tenderness and aesthetic elegance.
















Despite the sciency sterility of his words, perhaps Darwin was ultimately right in a broader philosophical sense when he reflected in The Descent of Man:

The difference in mind between man and the higher animals, great as it is, is certainly one of degree and not of kind. We have seen that the senses and intuitions, the various emotions and faculties, such as love, memory, attention, curiosity, imitation, reason, etc., of which man boasts, may be found in an incipient, or even sometimes in a well-developed condition, in the lower animals.

Fabian Oefner is a photographer and artist who wants to blend the disciplines of art and science. 
His psychedelic images capture natural phenomena and present them in unique and eye-catching ways. To date, subjects have included sound waves, iridescence, even magnetic ferroliquids and fire. His aim: to create images that appeal to both a viewer's heart and brain.

Oefner's photographs have been exhibited in various countries and are part of private collections around the globe. Besides pursuing his own projects, he also works on ad campaigns. He works and lives in Switzerland.

Magical Long-Exposure Firefly Photos Go Viral

Tsuneaki Hiramatsu knew something was up. It was the end of December and his amateur photo blog had suddenly jumped from a handful of visitors a day to thousands. The telephone customer service agent and hobby photographer was surprised.

“I was like, what happened?!” says the 35-year-old Hiramatsu, who lives in Okayama City, Japan.

What happened was that Hiramatsu’s long exposure and time-lapse photos of Japanese fireflies had started to go viral. Someone, somewhere, had re-posted his photos and they were spreading across the blogosphere like wildfire.

On Dec. 18, the photos appeared on a Tumblr blog called Polaroid Dreams. More than 24,000 people have subsequently liked and reblogged that post.

Christopher Jobson, whose art and design blog Colossal got four million hits last month, was one of those who reposted the photos from Polaroid Dreams, furthering the viral spread.

I’d never seen anything like it before,” Jobson says. “The photos look digital, or like the image was manufactured. But then you realize that it’s just time-lapse photography that has been wonderfully executed.” (This is not entirely true, as some of the photos are composites of multiple images.)

From there the photos continued to jump around the internet, popping up on countless other blogs as well as sites like My Modern Met and the website of the French newspaper Le Figaro.

Hiramatsu is not sure how far the photos have traveled, but the spread continues. He was thrilled when the American Museum of Natural History recently contacted him about using his photos to help promote an upcoming exhibition called “Creatures of Light: Nature’s Bioluminescence.

I’ve just been really surprised,” says Hiramatsu, who remains very humble about his recent success and is not planning on leaving his day job at the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, or NTT.

Clearly, though, the photos have resonated with a wide audience.

Hiramatsu took them at various points over a three-year period between 2008 and 2011 and they are from two different sites in the Okayama prefecture.

The long-exposure photos near the river were taken near Okayama City in the Hokubo area, and capture a certain type of firefly called the Genji Botaru. The photos in the woods were taken near Niimi City and the famous Tennoohachiman shrine and capture the Hime Botaru.

To make the photo where you see hundreds, if not thousands, of small firefly lights, Hiratmatsu used time-lapse photography to take several continuous exposures and then combined those exposures in post-production. Each photo where the firefly lights become trails is just one long exposure.

Hiratmatsu says he’s not the first to use these techniques to shoot Japanese fireflies. He openly admits borrowing them from other photographers who have posted tutorials on their own websites.

Nonetheless, it was Hiramatsu’s photos that took off. And while we might never know patient zero in his viral success, the spread is testament to their effect on viewers. He’s currently looking forward to upgrading to the Nikon D800 and continuing to learn more about photography — in part by shooting more fireflies.

We've put together a supporter's resource to help reach more people. You'll find translations of the various materials prepared by our community and learn how you can connect with other supporters.


Since the formation of Planetary Resources, our primary goal has been to build technology enabling us to prospect and mine asteroids. We've spent the last year making great leaps in the development of these technologies. These advancements have presented us with the opportunity to engage in another passion of our team:

to make space exploration accessible to everyone.

Space has always been something that most people only dream about. Very few ever get the chance to experience space — to feel that overwhelming sense of awe described by astronauts. Our challenge and vision is this: how can we make
that a reality?

Introducing: The ARKYD — [ahrk-kid]

The ARKYD is a technologically advanced, orbiting space telescope that will be controlled by YOU, the crowd, through your pledges and community involvement! You can even direct your telescope time to non-profit science centers and universities for use in your communities!

Just think about the true impact of this endeavor for a moment. Together we can provide access to technology that costs tens of millions of dollars into the hands of students, scientists and a new generation of explorers, who will use it in ways we can’t even fathom yet!

At Planetary Resources, our primary focus is mining asteroids, and we’re pushing the boundaries of what is possible by vertically integrating and applying innovations from consumer-based industries. It’s our goal to reduce the cost of space observatories many times over, allowing anyone to access them for their own use. We want to empower the crowd to solve the big problems of our time — and this is the first step to making that a reality.



The first publicly accessible space telescope! Take amazing photos of space or have your photo displayed above the Earth.

Our primary mission is to develop low-cost robotic spacecraft to explore and mine resource-rich asteroids within our reach. The first step to making this possible is the launching a fleet of ARKYD spacecraft to identify asteroids that are ripe for further exploration. This same capability has numerous other potential applications in education and research. The goals that we want to achieve with this Kickstarter mission are four-fold:

To give students access to space capabilities — Whether studying planets in a 5th grade class or writing a graduate thesis, students of all ages will have the ability to direct the telescope and explore what interests them! We’re planning some exciting new educational opportunities just for K-12 educational programs.

To support important research and discovery — There are thousands of institutions and researchers in need for greater access to in-orbit space observatories. The ARKYD will provide a new, low-cost resource to help observe distant galaxies, search for alien planets, and monitor the skies for potentially dangerous asteroids. Researchers at MIT, the University of Washington, and across the globe have shown interest in using the ARKYD to further their important research.

To build excitement about space and all of its potential — The ARKYD is designed to be a fun and interactive experience that is accessible to anyone. This kind of direct access to a satellite is unprecedented. Our backers will be the first people in history to control a public space telescope!

To give YOU a say — What makes this mission unique is that we’re putting control of the telescope in YOUR hands. You’ll get the opportunity to help decide which science centers and museums are the beneficiaries of ARKYD telescope time, what photos to take, and more. We’re putting YOU in control! By pledging toward this mission, you’ll receive access to our website and mobile apps allowing you to follow along with the progress of the satellite, sneak peaks at photos and videos, and get voting access to make your voice heard in the future direction of the satellite!




The engineering and development of the telescope itself is being covered by Planetary Resources, and we're investing millions of dollars in research and development to develop the ARKYD with advanced capabilities like photographing deep space and searching for asteroids. However, a publicly accessible satellite is very different from those that we intend to launch for the purposes of locating asteroids. The engineering and technological needs for doing each of those jobs are quite different.

Here's where we need YOUR help: The proceeds from this campaign will go to several different areas:
  1. To actually launch the satellite into space. 
  2. To support the spacecraft over its lifetime — including manpower to facilitate the photos, "selfies", monitoring the spacecraft and training the staff at the chosen science center that will take over control. 
  3. To create an easy-to-use Control Interface that will allow ANYONE to access and control the satellite. 
  4. To fund the creation of an incredible, interactive educational experience that can be used by schools anywhere, to enable students to experience space in a way that's never been possible.
