Researchers achieve electrical control of quantum bits, paving the way for quantum computers

For the first time ever, researchers have encoded quantum information using simple electrical pulses.

Researchers from UNSW in Australia are a big step closer to creating affordable, large quantum computers, after gaining electrical control of quantum bits, or qubits, for the first time.

The team was able to store quantum information in silicon using only simple electrical pulses, instead of pulses of oscillating magnetic fields. This is the same way that the computers we use today encode data, and it means that we now have the ability to cheaply and easily control the quantum computers of the future.

"We demonstrated that a highly coherent qubit, like the spin of a single phosphorus atom in isotopically enriched silicon, can be controlled using electric fields, instead of using pulses of oscillating magnetic fields," said lead author of the study, Arne Laucht from UNSW Engineering, in a press release.

This is something that researchers have been attempting since 1998, and the results have now been published in the open-access journal Science Advances

The method works by distorting the shape of the electron cloud attached to the phosphorous atom, quantum engineer Andrea Morello, who also worked on the research, explained in the release.

"This distortion at the atomic level has the effect of modifying the frequency at which the electron responds," he said.

"Therefore, we can selectively choose which qubit to operate. It's a bit like selecting which radio station we tune to, by turning a simple knob. Here, the 'knob' is the voltage applied to a small electrode placed above the atom."

The research suggests that it will be possible to locally control data in a large-scale quantum computers using only inexpensive voltage generators, as opposed to the pricey high-frequency microwave sources that quantum researchers have used to encode information in the past.

It also means that these types of qubits can be manufactured using technology similar to the kind we currently use, which will greatly cut the cost of quantum computers.

The key to the team's success was embedding the phosphorous atom in a thin layer of purified silicon that contains only the silicon-28 isotope, which is non-magnetic and doesn't disturb the qubit.

The UNSW Engineering quantum group was the first in the world to demonstrate single-atom spin qubits in silicon back in 2012, and they also last year showed that they could control these qubits with 99 percent accuracy. Their overall goal is to build the world's first affordable, large-scale quantum computer, and we honestly can't wait.

Master monkey's brain controls sedated 'avatar'


The brain of one monkey has been used to control the movements of another, "avatar", monkey, US scientists report.

Brain scans read the master monkey's mind and were used to electrically stimulate the avatar's spinal cord, resulting in controlled movement.

The team hope the method can be refined to allow paralysed people to regain control of their own body.

The findings, published in Nature Communications, have been described as "a key step forward".

Damage to the spinal cord can stop the flow of information from the brain to the body, leaving people unable to walk or feed themselves.

The researchers are aiming to bridge the damage with machinery. Match electrical activity

The scientists at Harvard Medical School said they could not justify paralysing a monkey. Instead, two were used - a master monkey and a sedated avatar.

The master had a brain chip implanted that could monitor the activity of up to 100 neurons.

During training, the physical actions of the monkey were matched up with the patterns of electrical activity in the neurons.

The avatar had 36 electrodes implanted in the spinal cord and tests were performed to see how stimulating different combinations of electrodes affected movement.

The two monkeys were then hooked up so that the brain scans in one controlled movements in real time in the other.

The sedated avatar held a joystick, while the master had to think about moving a cursor up or down.

In 98% of tests, the master could correctly control the avatar's arm.

One of the researchers, Dr Ziv Williams, told the BBC: "The goal is to take people with brain stem or spinal cord paralysis and bypass the injury.

"The hope is ultimately to get completely natural movement, I think it's theoretically possible, but it will require an exponential additional effort to get to that point."

He said that giving paralysed people even a small amount of movement could dramatically alter their quality of life. Reality or science fiction?

The idea of one brain controlling an avatar body is the stuff of blockbuster Hollywood movies.

However, Prof Christopher James, of the University of Warwick, dismissed a future of controlling other people's bodies by thought.

He said: "Some people may be concerned this might mean someone taking over control of someone else's body, but the risk of this is a no-brainer.

"Whilst the control of limbs is sophisticated, it is still rather crude overall, plus of course in an able-bodied person their own control over their limbs remains anyway, so no-one is going to control anyone else's body against their wishes any time soon."

Instead, he said this was "very important research" with "profound" implications "especially for controlling limbs in spinal cord injury, or controlling prosthetic limbs with limb amputees".

Realising that goal will face additional challenges. Moving a cursor up and down is a long way from the dextrous movement needed to drink from a cup.

There are also differences in the muscles of people after paralysis; they tend to become more rigid. And fluctuating blood pressure may make restoring control more challenging.

Prof Bernard Conway, head of biomedical engineering at the University of Strathclyde, said: "The work is a key step forward that demonstrates the potential of brain machine interfaces to be used in restoring purposeful movement to people affected by paralysis. 

"However, significant work still remains to be done before this technology will be able to be offered to the people who need it."

Para la actual administración del Área Metropolitana es prioridad el salvamento del río Medellín y así quedó manifestado desde su Plan de Gestión Pura Vida 2012-2015, cuya Línea 1 es: EL RÍO MEDELLÍN – ABURRÁ Y SUS AFLUENTES.

Surge así todo un compendio de programas y proyectos destinados al saneamiento, descontaminación, educación ambiental, monitoreo, acciones de control, vigilancia y gestión de riesgos enmarcados en la estrategia S.O.S. RÍO cuya inversión total asciende a 114 mil millones de pesos.

Varias ciudades del país le han dado la espalda a sus ríos, nosotros por el contrario lo tenemos como eje integrador del Valle de Aburrá y con esta inversión, que es muy importante, realizaremos acciones para su cuidado y protección” afirmó Carlos Mario Montoya durante la presentación de S.O.S. RÍO.

El principio fundamental de este Plan es la conservación de la VIDA en todas sus formas, por lo cual es prioritario el tratamiento de los cuerpos de agua en su calidad de elementos propiciadores de la vida en los ecosistemas. S.O.S. RÍO tiene un conjunto de acciones encaminadas a la consolidación y recuperación del río y sus afluentes como principal elemento estructurante natural metropolitano. Las acciones están dirigidas no sólo a la recuperación y conservación de la cuenca del río Medellín, sino también al aprovechamiento del gran potencial de este elemento natural para consolidar una red de espacios naturales y construidos, que permitan fortalecer el espacio público, los centros de actividades y hábitat del río como elemento articulador del Valle de Aburrá.

PROGRAMAS
  1. Equidad para uso y aprovechamiento eficiente del recurso agua. Meta: Elaboración e implementación del plan de ordenamiento del recurso hídrico del Valle de Aburrá
  2. Monitoreo, seguimiento y control del recurso hídrico en la cuenca del río. Meta: Operación de 42 estaciones fijas y móviles de monitoreo del agua superficial.
  3. Recuperación de la calidad del río y sus afluentes. Meta: Construcción de 7.5 kilómetros de interceptor y conexión de 1.500 viviendas a las redes de alcantarillado no convencional, para disminuir los vertimientos de aguas residuales al río y sus quebradas.
  4. Integración espacial urbano regional de las márgenes del río y sus afluentes. Meta: Lograr laplanificación de 1700 hectáreas en torno al río.
  5. Gestión del riesgo por inundación y avenidas torrenciales. Metas: Adecuación y reparación de 10 puntos críticos en el cauce principal del río (1.500 metros lineales) e intervención de 20 puntos críticos en quebradas afluentes en al menos 5.000 metros lineales de obra física, como medida de mitigación y prevención de inundaciones. Además lograr la remoción de 40.000 m3 de sedimentos para el mantenimiento de obras hidráulicas y cauces, como estrategia de protección de la vida de la población vulnerable por fenómenos de origen hidrometeorológico.
Proyectos Asociados:
Dentro de la estrategia el Área Metropolitana realizará proyectos tendientes al mejoramiento del control y la vigilancia del río Medellín con la puesta en operación de la Unidad de Emergencias Ambientales que funcionará 24 horas al día, 7 días a la semana, para optimizar la atención a casos urgentes como los vertimientos, facilitando la investigación de estos casos, para la posterior imposición de sanciones a los infractores que alteren los objetivos de calidad del río y modifiquen las condiciones de color del cuerpo de agua.

También se ejecutarán acciones de sensibilización y educación: con los Cuidá, visitas al nacimiento del río con públicos prioritarios, charlas en Instituciones Educativas y Universidades, difusión del mensaje en las Ludotecas Ambientales e identificación de empresas con relación directa al río. Adicionalmente se realizará una campaña con recicladores, escombreros y areneros sobre el cuidado al río.

Además se adelantarán una serie de actividades para la apropiación del río Medellín por parte de la comunidad como el Tour Pura Vida – actividad institucional del Área Metropolitana en los municipios - aprovechamiento de las ciclovías dominicales en la zona del río, actividades con grupos ambientales y con entidades que lideren proyectos asociados al río, realización de conciertos, semanas temáticas y concursos para incitar al cuidado, apadrinamiento, protección y exaltación de casos de éxito de empresas que le apuesten al cuidado del río Medellín

Urban Farming Is Growing a Green Future

With seven billion mouths to feed, human agriculture exerts a tremendous toll on the planet, from water draws to pollution, and from energy use to habitat loss. But there is also a growing set of solutions, from organic agriculture to integrated pest management.

More people around the world are taking a look at urban farming, which offers to make our food as "local" as possible. By growing what we need near where we live, we decrease the "food miles" associated with long-distance transportation. We also get the freshest produce money can buy, and we are encouraged to eat in season.

Another benefit of urban farming is that it can add greenery to cities, reducing harmful runoff, increasing shading, and countering the unpleasant heat island effect. Garden plots can help people reconnect with the Earth, and gain a greater appreciation for where our food comes from (hint: not from plastic packages).

Rooftop and patio gardens create peaceful places for relaxation or contemplation, and they can attract tourists—consider the booming businesses that have sprung up around New York City's lush High Line Park. And urban farming can bring jobs to underserved and depressed urban areas.

Although planners have a long way to go, boosters envision soaring vertical farms that will eventually produce most of what we need within a short walk from home. Still, land in cities is often expensive, especially since gardens tend to contribute to gentrification and rising rents. Urban soils can be loaded with lead, arsenic, and other toxins, requiring remediation or replacement before planting can be done safely.

Cramped conditions can limit yields, and getting enough water and sunlight can be concerns.

Still, if the right combinations of new technology, community support, and economic incentives align, it's possible we may soon be munching on skyscraper scallions and avenue arugula.

An early example is the rooftop garden on the InterContinental New York Barclay Hotel, which includes an apiary. The Midtown bees produce honey used in the hotel's kitchen, and they fly to pollinate plants as far as five miles away.

Planting a Revolution

Across town, planters beautify a rooftop in Hell's Kitchen. Big cities like New York host acres of flat, sunny space, which can be put to use growing food or flowers.

Integrated "green roofs" are gradually catching on. In these, a thin layer of soil or other medium supports a dense mat of plants. Such features can be promoted as amenities to renters or buyers, and they win points toward green building certifications.

But it's also possible to start smaller, by setting out a pot or two, even if just on a balcony.

Farming the Future

Ken Dunn clears snow from a hoop greenhouse at Chicago's City Farm. The nonprofit project sells fresh produce from a stand in the summer and fall and offers CSA (community-supported agriculture) shares to city residents, who pay to partake in nature's bounty.

City Farm transformed an acre of crumbling cement into an operation that produces 25,000 pounds of heirloom tomatoes, carrots, beets, arugula, and herbs a year. The farm provides economic opportunity and attracts throngs of volunteers and visitors in the Windy City.

Several area restaurants buy ingredients from City Farm, from Vie to Nightwood and North Pond. Bruce Sherman, chef and owner of North Pond, praised the farm's produce, telling the group, "The fact that City Farm grows exceptional produce the right way only makes it better."


Movable Farm

Chicago's City Farm, a project of the nonprofit Resource Center, is built on movable plates, so the entire operation can be relocated at the end of a growing season if leases change. The farm has occupied several different sites, including the edge of the former Cabrini-Green housing projects.


Rolling Greens

Curt Ellis (pictured) and Ian Cheney won rave reviews for their 2007 documentary King Corn, about the drawbacks to industrial agriculture. They built on that success by filling up the back of a 1986 Dodge Ram with soil and planting tomatoes.

Over the past few years, the two friends have driven their Truck Farm from neighborhood to neighborhood, giving urban kids a chance to get their hands dirty, and see how food looks on the (moving) ground. They produced a film on the project in 2011, Truck Farm, and they've enlisted such singer/songwriters as Jack Johnson and Charlie Sutton to attract the crowds.

It's not likely we'll be sourcing the majority of our food from moving vehicles in the near future, but the Truck Farm project shows how thinking outside the garden box can introduce a new audience to natural foods.(Related: Organic Container Gardens

The Office Farm

Nace la unidad de la Fiscalía contra delitos ambientales (Colombia)

Nueva unidad de la Fiscalía empezará a funcionar en los próximos días
Contará con 22 fiscales especializados y tendrá como objetivo procesar a quienes contaminen o exploten ilícitamente los recursos naturales.

Atendiendo las recomendaciones internacionales previstas en la Declaración de Río de Janeiro (Brasil) sobre el medio ambiente, y en el marco de un convenio interinstitucional firmado entre
  • Ingeominas
  • la Procuraduría
  • los ministerios de Minas y Medio Ambiente
  • la Fiscalía General de la Nación 
acaban de crear la Unidad Nacional de Delitos contra los Recursos Naturales y el Medio Ambiente.

Esta dependencia contará con 22 fiscales especializados, encargados de investigar, entre otros,
  • la contaminación ambiental, 
  • invasión de áreas ecológicas, 
  • explotación ilícita de yacimientos naturales y, en general, 
  • todas las irregularidades que afectan el ecosistema.
La acentuada ola invernal en el país, reflejo para los expertos del cambio climático ocasionado por el deterioro y daño del hombre al medioambiente, impulsaron a la fiscal general Viviane Morales Hoyos a firmar la resolución 0-3438 de 2011 mediante la cual le asignan a esta nueva unidad el objeto de adelantar investigaciones penales en contra de particulares o empresas que atenten contra los recursos naturales del Estado y pongan en peligro el ambiente.

Además, está unidad tendrá la potestad de ejercer las labores necesarias para obtener la reparación del daño ocasionado como consecuencia de una explotación ilegal de recursos naturales.

Minería ilegal, contaminación de fuentes hídricas, invasión de terrenos de uso público o explotación de zonas reservadas o de patrimonio natural serán algunos de los frentes que deberá asumir la Unidad Nacional de Delitos contra los Recursos Naturales y el Medio Ambiente.

Investigaciones por daño en humedales, construcción ilegal en los cerros de Bogotá o la vigilancia con lupa de empresas que explotan el carbón a cielo abierto en el Cesar o La Guajira serán temas obligados que deberá tener en cuenta esta nueva unidad. El reto, según informaron fuentes del ente acusador, será ponerle coto de una buena vez a las mafias que se mueven en el mercado negro de los recursos naturales.

La tarea de esta nueva dependencia es especialmente importante si se tiene en cuenta que, en su momento, el comandante de las Fuerzas Militares, almirante Édgar Cely, aseguró que la minería ilegal se había convertido en una fuente de financiación primaria de las Farc.

Sin duda alguna este será uno de los frentes más difíciles de combatir, y a la vez uno de los más urgentes, debido al impulso que desde el gobierno central se le está dando a esta locomotora, una acción legítima que a su vez estimula la explotación ilegal de recursos como oro y carbón.

Por ejemplo, se sabe que en algunas partes del territorio se realiza minería, o se pretende realizar en el futuro cercano, en el interior de Parques Naturales Nacionales, áreas de gran importancia ecológica para la Nación.

En síntesis, tal como la Procuraduría tiene una delegada para asuntos ambientales y agrarios, encargada del monitoreo e investigación de hechos que atenten contra el medioambiente, la Fiscalía busca poner en cintura a los inescrupulosos que se han enriquecido a costa de toda suerte daños ecológicos. La unidad tendrá su cuerpo central de investigadores en Bogotá, pero también tendrá sedes alternas en Barranquilla, Villavicencio, Bucaramanga, Cali y Antioquia.
