Ban Bear Baiting Competitions

Target: United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior
Sponsored by: Animal Advocates

Bears have their teeth and claws removed, are tethered to a post and are subjected to repeated assaults by dogs until it dies. Without teeth or claws, the bear cannot defend itself and is tormented simply for entertainment. It is illegal in every civilized country except Pakistan and the United States of America.

From the HSUS report:
"There are currently 26 captive black bears in South Carolina, many likely used for bear baiting. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources issued permits for their possession, but has turned a blind eye to the cruelty they endure. The South Carolina DNR does not inspect bear baiting competitions.... The DNR issued captive bear permits to individuals who had been convicted of violating wildlife laws, including poaching a bear out of season.

This is not a sport, it is animal cruelty. We ask that you ban it from all 50 states and prosecute those who continue to participate with felony animal cruelty.
